  • Thierry Mugler: Perfume Profile

Thierry Mugler was born in Strasbourg in 1949, and became fascinated with dance at a young age. He joined the Rhin Opera ballet corps at fourteen, and exposed himself to the world of theatre, discovering costume and stage design. Inspired, Mugler moved to Paris in 1969 and began creating hand-made clothing for a small Parisian boutique. His designs gathered a cult following, leading to commissions for work at ready-to-wear fashion houses throughout continental Europe. In 1973, in juxtaposition to the extravagant popular style of the times, Mugler formed his own company celebrating subtle feminine elegance. Mugler delighted in designing each and very element of his expansive fashion shows, and later partnered Cirque de Soleil in creating the show Zumanity, which ran for several years.

In 1992, Mugler went into partnership with Clarins, who wanted to diversify their product line and move into the fragrance world, and were looking for a high-end designer to headline their perfumes. In his fragrances, Mugler invokes many of the same ideals as in his fashion design: he ignores trends and creates from within himself, developing scents that rest on reviving feelings and memories, creating an aura rather than just a smell. His first perfume, Angel, was born, in which a light and airy top note is followed by a fruity heart of passion fruit, pineapple, and peach, which melts into a base of patchouli, chocolate, honey, vanilla, and caramel. We have Angel available in both 15ml and 25ml bottles, prices beginning at £27.99, and a couple of ultra-posh gift sets too.

Alien is Mugler’s other major fragrance, and again attempts to take the user into a dream state, to immerse them in the culture of the perfume. The scent blends distinctive notes of woody amber with gentle floral notes of jasmine, and the bottle is designed to appear as a sacred stone, holding an elixir from another world. A 30ml bottle will set you back just £39.99, postage included as always.

Enter the fantastic, mystical world of Thierry Mugler, and transport yourself away with the fairies with just a tiny spray of one of his magnificent creations. Perhaps you should make sure you’re locked in a safe place the first time you try it.

  • Burberry Range: Perfume Profile

The Burberry story began in 1856, when the company was founded as a clothing shop by Thomas Burberry. By 1870 they had begun to specialise in outdoors attire, and invented the gabardine, a water-resistant yet breathable coat that became exceedingly popular among those with a taste for adventure. Burberry came to supply famous explorers such as George Mallory and Ernest Shackleton in their quests to conquer Everest and the Antarctic, respectively, and invented the trench coat during the First World War, which was worn by army officers. The famous Burberry Check pattern (once infamously sported by Daniella Westbrook and her baby) was first used as a liner in the 20s, but went on to dominate Burberry items in the late 60s, when it was first used for hats, scarves, umbrellas, and anything else they could think of.

Burberry’s carefully cultivated brand perception took a hit in the 70s as it became associated with UK football hooligan culture, and this image has proven difficult for the company to shake off, as they continued to be link to ‘chav culture’ into the twenty-first century. The firm, however, are fighting back: in recent years classy designs and a move away from the Check pattern have led to them being returned to the forefront of high-end British design.

At Fragrance Mad we have a massive range of Burberry fragrances for both men and women. Choose your favourite out of London, Touch, Weekend, Classic, The Beat, Summer, Sport, and Brit, and don’t forget our range of Christmas Gift Sets either. There’s something for all the family, even the hooligan.

Dolce & Gabbana is an Italian company formed by designers Dominico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana in Milan. The firm’s meteoric rise has led to an annual turnover approaching a billion euros, and made celebrities of its owners.

The One is D&G’s current flagship fragrance, and has been adapted for both men and women. The feminine Eau de Parfum is a warm floral oriental, containing a sun-touched citrus blend of bergamot and mandarin, complemented by the warm fruit of lychee and peach, at the top of the fragrance; a heart of lily, muguet, and jasmine; and plum and vetiver at the base. The men’s Eau de Toilette, by contrast, concentrates on spicy yet subtle warm notes, and is comprised of top notes of grapefruit, coriander, and basil; a heart of cardamom, ginger, and orange blossom; and cedar, ambre, and tobacco at the base.

At Fragrance Mad, you can get your mitts on a 50ml Eau de Parfum for £37.99 or a man-sized 100ml Eau de Toilette for £41.49. Hurry!

  • Prada Prestige Range at Fragrance Mad

Prada is well-renowned as one of the world’s most highly-exclusive and prestigious brands, and they’ve now provided Fragrance Mad with our most expensive (and heavy) product. A 750ml bottle of Infusion D’Iris for ladies or Infusion D’Homme will set you back the small matter of £149.99, and comes with an empty 30ml bottle and a funnel to decant with. A bargain, I’m sure you’ll agree! Perhaps add a dash to some fine vintage whiskey and champagne to make an upper-class cocktail, although this is not strictly recommended.

The brand of Prada began as an Italian leather goods shop run by brothers Mario and Martino Prada, who started the company in 1913 as a seller of Italian leather and importer of English luggage cases. The business was passed down generations of the family, but it wasn’t until the early 80s that it gathered enough steam to open a second boutique in Milan. By 1984, the brand was becoming recognised around the world for its quality, and shops were now opened in Paris, New York, Madrid, and Florence, and Prada’s handbags were seen as a signature of the affluent working woman. Moving into the 90s, Prada set about confirming its position as one of the world’s leading and most exclusive brands by buying up shares in rival firms, constantly elevating their own position at the upper echelons of the fashion world.

As well as our huge bottles, we also stock a few more manageable items from the exquisite Prada perfume range. The above-mentioned Infusion D’Iris by Prada is an elegant, refreshing fragrance with top notes of galbanum, mandarin orange, orange blossom, and lentisk; a heart of iris, cedar, and vetiver; and base notes of benzoin and frankincense. If you’re not in the market for 750ml, we’ve got 50ml available for the princely sum of £36.99. Or if you want even smaller quantities of fragrance, Tendre and Prada Pour Homme are available in 3x10ml bottles to make them perfect for travel, and you can get these for £31.99 and £29.99, respectively. Of course, as ever these prices are what you pay at the checkout: no extravagant postage stealth charges tacked on as you’re about to pay. So there you go, any amount of perfume you require between 10 and 750ml, we’ve got it covered!
