Yves Saint Laurent, surprisingly a real person and not just a made-up name, was born in Algeria in 1936, moving to France at a young age. He broke into the fashion world as a designer for Christian Dior at the age of seventeen and, after Dior’s shock death four years later, became the head of Dior at the tender age of twenty-one. His Spring 1958 collection saved the company from financial strife and made him an international household name in the fashion industry. Unfortunately, his designs over the next couple of years were savaged by the press, and in 1960 he found himself conscripted into the French army, reportedly at the request of the owner of Dior so he could be replaced.

Saint Laurent lasted twenty days in the army before bullying from fellow soldiers led to a stay in military hospital, which turned to a mental hospital after the news of his firing from Dior caused a breakdown. On recovery, Saint Laurent successfully sued Dior for breach of contract and, with the backing of a rich millionaire with a big moustache, formed his own fashion house. The designer endured a difficult relationship with the press, who dismissed much of his work as boring and irrelevant, but this never had a discernible impact on his following among the general public, which continually grew. Yves Saint Laurent died in 2008 of brain cancer, but his reputation and influence had grown to such levels that in 2009 he was named as the world’s top-earning dead celebrity by Forbes, an honour that in 2010 will presumably go to Michael Jackson.
