• Alexander McQueen MyQueen: £19.99 for 100ml at Fragrance Mad

Alexander McQueen was born in London in 1969, and left school at 16 to become an apprentice tailor on the famous Saville Row. While there he tailored for such illustrious clients as Prince Charles, and built a porfolio of exquisitely tailored designs. After studying for a masters degree in fashion design, McQueen embarked on a career as a designer in 1994, and immediately attracted rave reviews and a high-profile client base. McQueen sadly commited suicide in 2010 following the death of his mother, aged just 40, but by this time had already attracted more accolades than many designers achieve in a lifetime, including being named British Designer of the Year a record four times. He will long be remembered in the fashion world for his outrageous and controversial designs.

McQueen’s first fragrance, Kingdom, was launched in 2000, but met with little success as its heavy cumin base and strong odours led some to declare that it smelled like “old sex”. Learning his lesson from this initial foray into the perfume world, McQueen returned in 2006, with MyQueen, mooted by him as a “fairytale fragrance to last for eternity”. The scent achieves this with the use of a sensual blend of almond, violet, orange flower, white musk, iris and vanilla; offering a delicate and captivating bouquet. Kingdom is now sadly discontinued, so wringing out a massage parlour mattress is the only way to replicate that scent, but the lovely MyQueen Eau de Parfum is still going strong, and is available from Fragrance Mad at the bargain price of £19.99 for 100ml.

  • Rochas Femme and Homme: Perfume Profile

The fashion house of Rochas was formed by Marcel Rochas in 1922, and became known for innovative haute couture design. After floundering for some years, it again found note after Olivier Theyskens was appointed Creative Director in 2002, and many wealthy celebrities became clients. Unfortunately, the firm ran into problems as Theyskens refused to supplement Rochas’ income with mass-market products, instead relying solely on sales of expensive gowns that only the super-rich could afford. Rochas’ fashion division was discontinued in 2006, leading to consternation in the industry as insiders felt that fashion design for art’s sake should be pursued, rather than a constant chasing of the yankee dollar.  A few years on, the fashion line is currently in the process of being resurrected, but it’s unclear who will be footing the bills if a cheaper product range isn’t introduced.

Thankfully, the fragrance arm of Rochas has veered clear of such problems, delivering exquisite perfumes and aftershaves, but without the obscene £20,000 a squirt price tags that the brand is synonymous with. Desir de Rochas Homme is for the stately gentleman, and includes notes of seed anise, cardamom, cedar, cashmeran, and vanilla. Best of all, it’s available for the barn-storming price of £19.99 including delivery for a 100ml EDT, half of the RRP! For the more femininely-inclined amongst you, Rochas Femme is a sensual and floral fragrance, containing top notes of bergamot, peach, and plum; a heart of jasmine, cumin, and Bulgarian rose; and notes of patchouli and vanilla at its base. This time there’s an absurd 60% off the RRP: a 100ml EDT costing just £22.99 at Fragrance Mad. Plus, if Rochas doesn’t tickle your fancy, there’s still plenty of time to browse our wide-ranging Valentine’s Sale and pick up some fabulous deals for that special someone.
