Sean Combs was born in Harlem, New York City in 1969, into a situation that seemed to bear scant prospect for the life of riches that would follow. Combs’ father Melvin, an associate and friend of New York drug kingpin, Frank Lucas (famously portrayed by Denzel Washington in the film American Gangster), was gunned down when Sean was just a child, but left enough money behind to enable his son to attend university, where he excelled at marketing and party planning. Combs adopted the name Puff Daddy and began to promote hip hop events, before forming his own record label, with rap heavyweight and friend the Notorious B.I.G as his first artist. By 1996, he was recording his own music, and scored a massive global hit in the wake of B.I.G’s death by covering Sting and the Police’s “I’ll Be Watching You” as “I’ll Be Missing You”. Now an affirmed megastar, Puff Daddy became famous for dating Jennifer Lopez, and later changed his name to P Diddy, and then simply Diddy.

Away from music, Combs set about forming Sean John Inc., a fashion and fragrance label, and has released fragrances such as Unforgivable Woman and I Am King. Unforgivable Woman is his most successful scent, and was released in 2007. The floriental perfume contains top notes of apple, grapefruit, cassia, neroli, orange blossom, and pear; continues with a floral heart of cyclamen, lily of the valley, freesia, rose, jasmine, orange blossom, and violet; and the perfume is completed with a base of patchouli, sandalwood, oakmoss, vetiver, vanilla, cedar, amber, tonka bean, and iris. This was followed by two new formulations, one for him and one for her, that were brought to market in 2008 to celebrate thirty years of success of the Jeanne Arthes house. In homage to their bestselling scent, Arthes decided to borrow its name for the new fragrances. A nice idea, but considering they’re completely different, they could have at least named it Cobra Jr!
